When Should Radiators be Balanced?

Balancing Your Radiators: A Simple Guide
Prepare Your Tools: You'll need a radiator bleed key, a digital thermometer or infrared thermometer, and a lockshield valve adjuster or adjustable spanner.
Turn on Your Heating: To understand the heating performance of your radiators, turn your central heating system to the maximum temperature and wait until all radiators are fully heated.
Identify the Order of Radiators: Identify the quickest and the slowest radiators to heat up. The one that heats up the fastest is likely the closest to the boiler, and the slowest is likely the furthest away.
Turn Off Your Heating: Allow the system and the radiators to cool down completely before the next step.
Adjust the Lockshield Valve: Starting with the first radiator (the one that heated up fastest), close the lockshield valve by turning it clockwise until it cannot be turned further. Then open it by about one-quarter of a turn.
Turn Your Heating Back On: As the first radiator heats up, use your thermometer to measure the temperature of the pipe leading into one side of the radiator and then the other. The goal is to achieve a 12°C (approximately 20°F) difference between the two sides. You can adjust the lockshield valve incrementally to reach this difference.
Repeat for Each Radiator: Continue with the same process for each radiator in the order in which they heated up initially. For each subsequent radiator, you might need to open the lockshield valve a bit more than the previous one.
